gonzo phenomenology of virtual worlds
I’ll try to keep this one short, just to clarify some basic terms we’ll need in the days to come. There has been lot of harm made by the reports of some German media about pedophilia in Second Life (as reported in SL Herald). Even more harm is to be expected.
Child pornography refers to pornography depicting minors. Its production and possession are illegal in jurisdictions throughout the world, although details of local statutes vary.
There is a good reason for prohibiting it. There are real life children that are harmed by production of child porn. Every child on this planet has a right (and it cannot be stressed enough) to live and develop freely. Sexuality of every child must remain free and untouched until he or she grow up to solely decide how to enjoy it. Is that clear? Unfortunately not. That is why jurisdictions all over the planet are (and should be) very harsh over abusers.
Other term we deal with is (taken from Wikipedia again):
Age-play is a form of regressive role-play in which a physical adult takes on the role of a child. This may be purely regressive (in order to re-experience childhood in a non-sexual sense), or sexual (the role-playing of a child/adult relationship in sex, which may be a sexual fetish and is often grouped within BDSM).
Couple of months ago the witch hunt started. Age-play is considered a big crime in the second life. And it seems that everybody has forgotten one important thing: there are no minors involved in age-play. Even if a kid sneaks on the main grin, do you really think that (s)he will play a child? Or will try to make a grown up avatar and feel a bit of grown-up’s world?
People who do age-play are adults. All of them. Maybe you and me dislike their role-playing theme, maybe we find it disgusting, but there are no RL children in it. And we can continue to dislike it as we want. Just remember that there are people who dislike cyberpunk, who find furries sick and even those who would rather log out forever than to spend a night with “normals” whose avatars looks like from the fashion magazines while blinking their virtual gold near the pools. Tastes are not to be discussed. We are all living our imaginations, respect that.
