gonzo phenomenology of virtual worlds
It is pure pleasure to watch how good projects develops. If you spent all your second life hiding in a slum and missed AjaxLife, it is a system developed by Katharine Berry from Teen Grid which enables you to log in to second life via your browser. For details, check the first post about AjaxLife. You can access it on https://ajaxlife.net/client or use the banner on the sidebar. And if you have a second life related blog, feel free to use the banner (hotlinking is ok for it) and spread the word.
As Katharine informs us, there are some improvements of the AjaxLife lately. First one, that comes on the login screen, is a really nice surprise. Now you can choose which grid to connect to. That means not only Linden Lab's main and beta grid but also OpenSim grids: OSGrid, DeepGrid and Zion/Ruth. Choice of interface languages is also there. And after logging in and message of the day you're quite equipped to do many things that doesn't require walking around and seeing the world around you. Your avatar is there, fully rezzed so have in mind how (un)dressed and where you were last time you disconnected.
Newly added features are:
- Inventory browsing
- Viewing of notecards, scripts and textures
- Teleporting to landmarks in your inventory
- Doesn’t Ruth any more, generally speaking.
- Region stats window
- Nearby avatars window
- Offering teleports via profiles
- MobileSafari (iPhone/iPod touch) gets a different login screen. Unfortunately, the login button on said screen isn’t implemented yet, so it doesn’t do much.
I don't want to sound like a pest but here are some of the tings I'm missing or which, IMHO, would be nice to have in some of the next releases:
AjaxLife works from the most mayor browsers, though after these changes
it is highly unlikely this will work in IE6, and it may not work in IE7 either. However, I’m too tired to chase down browsers that don’t deserve to exist.

Will try it today ;)
I get a 502 error from Firefox and Safari on a Mac. Anybody else having better luck?
I am getting 502 at this moment too.
It is usually either problem with requesting ISP or that (considering that two of us, probably from different ISP’s are having the same problem) AjaxLife server is overloaded.
I’m working down your list! I’m, uh, about halfway through the first one - it has your location in the corner, and (if not in IE) a minimap rendered showing where you are and others in the sim are.
And yes, errors in the 500s are almost always my fault. Leave a comment in my blog, and I’ll be pinged and should have it fixed within ten minutes, provided I’m in a position to do so. (i.e. not in class at school or something)
What can I say? I am so glad that you are still in that project despite leaving the grid.
