I just wanted to correct the common mistake of calling Extropia the city. Even if it is formally recognized as at The Technocratic City-State of Extropia (SLURL), Extropia is one nice little village.

City it might be one day. It will, if the Prophesy of Soph come true, that on the first State Holiday we'll also celebrate plugging-in of the 15th sim. I don't know how big that is, fifteen sims, I never walked that far, maybe Natsumi and Argent can tell you. But it must be big. And you can hardly know all the residents there. When it's that big, then we call it a city.
It will be great to see that big digital thing, Extropia grown to a city. An organism. That high frequency symbiosis of humans in a digital world. All that data of dozens of avatars and thousands of attachments running back and forth. All the IM's and all the animation data. That thing lives its own life. And that being, that lifeform, is… (OMG, here comes the matrix)… that lifeform is driven by the humans. Yes, you that stare into monitors. We all feed our digital living form. Welcome to live experiment of transhumanism.
When I was a kid, 10-years-old maybe, I was thinking how cool it would be to do the lab experiment of recreating life. From the spark in the swamps to….. I don't know… to primates. :) Evolution in vitro. OK, I was a kid and it took me a couple of thinking cycles to crash that dream appart by understanding that it would took to long. And I had no idea of some catalyser to speed up a process. Waiting a couple of millions of years just to come to the phase where you have something to put under the microscope is not acceptable idea for any kid. My childhood science dream crumbled apart.
So, now you know how mad scientists develop.
Anyway, we have that lovely little digital lifeform we are all connected to. Yes, like in Matrix, we feed it. In that symbiosis we provide life. We provide libido, impulses, instincts, thoughts, forms. We directly provide moving and vibrating. Unlike Matrix, we don't float in tanks with some slimy bluish liquid. That might come in the next version. Grid will be down and download of the new client will be mandatory. Until then, stick to the keyboard and /me lines.

So that is our dear little digital pet. First generation symbiotic baby. Humans scuba-diving in data.
But between a digital being that still use outsourced non-artificial intelligence and those beings out of the grid that we call humans, there is where we, avatars, live. In our lovely village. Young but prosperous and promising. Small but vibrant. Busy, but not too much. And sexy too. As one of the regular visitors said:
btw, the 80% of SL people I would like to share a bed with are residents or visitors of that place :-p

“humans scubadiving in data” lovely phrase dandellion.
your blog made me wonder about recreating humanlife in pixels and data.
If there is one thing robots and all kinds of artificial intelligence are missing than its human emotions and behaviour. Therefore Sl is a dream for any scientist to gather that information .
Could SL be a huge investigation, i wonder. The money is probably the biggest drive for the lindenlabbies but it could be that someone is using all information , all human emotions recorded in chat and IM to get a clear view of human behaviour in general. I mean, there’s no bigger survey where humans are more themselves than SL. Only think of what one can learn about the opposite sex in SL . Takes years in first world to do that .
the whole grid as an experiment? Might be that somebody is playing that game too. Question is, if we should start being paranoid now?
I never walked that far, maybe Natsumi and Argent can tell you. But it must be big.
15 SIMs…I’m pretty sure Natsumi and I have walked more than 15, though probably less than 30. An yes, it is a long way to walk. Thing is, 99% of the SIMs we walked through were devoid of people, and many of them were largely devoid of interesting content too.
Now imagine 15 contiguous SIMs filled with beautiful, sexy, smart, forward-looking people and their homes and businesses…
Ooooh yeah :D
*grabs her head* omg this is going to keep me busy for a few days at least… and that with the holidays coming and all the shopping still to do (wasn’t that something in a meme? ;-) ) SLl as a symbiosis of human and digital technology: intriguing thought… I loved to read this Dandellion! *takes a deep breath and runs back to first life*
certainly not paranoid , We just need to fool them by start acting in a non human behaviour
Next time you fall in love , kill your loved one with the desert eagles hanging on your hips
And explain in chat and IM that its common human behaviour :P
Leroy, there were two times I haven’t done that. Though I prefer Lugers and lately, Redemptions.
Zipp, thoughts like this are to be left for aftershopping. Some priorities must be set.
Argent, I am not going to imagine it. I’ll leave it to come in real (hmmmm…). Until then I will enjoy living in a village :p
