Voice, Once Again

society 4 Comments

London Spenger's Last Post About Voice has shaken this part of SLogosphere. I guess it was the one of the peaks that bursts around about it. I see I am not the only one who was shaken once again and who had to reconsider some things. Funny enough, the very first post on this blog is about voice. So…

One thing is sure, the second life will not be the same. But, I am surprised by the amount of hostility we all show. Hostility usually comes from fear. Fear of what?

The fact is that the grid is large enough. One can spend the whole second life without going to the places that find offensive or uninteresting or inappropriate. What I don't understand why we always tend to think that everybody must live their lives the way we like to live our own? Yes, the world will divide. Maybe some of us will lose some favourite spots on the map, but hey, that happens every now and then. Maybe some will lose some friends. But, in that case, I would rethink that friendship. At least, maybe our games/lives don't go along any more. That is a normal thing in life, too.

Both sides of the mic switch has their arguments. I started this post as a list of non-voice arguments. Maybe it is pointless to cite them all. Maybe I am just too lazy. And, I don't want to give material for excusing oneself for not using voice. Nobody is forced to use it and nobody is forced to explain why not! From not having headset, disliking own voice, protecting RL and privacy to background noise and finding the game more interesting in text lines.

Just as some things will never be done in voice, like all those descriptive lines, some things will be much better in voice. I don't have enough synonyms for moaning as I can do them. :p

I guess that some percent of population will be present in both worlds. Some will behave like the specific grid is set to, some will keep voice for the closer circle of people. How big that part will be is yet to be seen. How the other two groups will behave is to be seen, too. One thing I am sure of is that this is not my last post about voice in second life.

If you like this story, share it with the rest of the world. Thanks.

  1. Very nice and interesting post.
You’re so right. What are we afraid of?
And again, about friends, you’re right again, I’d reconsider friendships in that case, as i am currently doing now.
Oh and btw, lovely picture… Keep up the good work :)

  2. “Has shaken this part of SLogosphere”… *blushes*

It is good to know this isn’t your last one about it, I’ll keep reading them and shooting from the gallery (I never said it was going to be my last comment avout voice, didn’t I? :-p).

  3. We will all have to say a lot about it in the months to come. Once we settle down with(out) voice, something else will come. It is not about voice, and it is not about ageplay or verification…. it is about tolerance. Where the hell tolerance gone?

  4. I can’t tolerate intolerance either.
