First it was no kids, Gorreans and BDSM allowed at all. Then it was: oh, yes, they can come but we won't exhibit their work. Now, everything is ok. Everybody is welcome and everybody can exhibit. Just like nothing ever happened. It was just a bad dream, baby.
As we are informed by Everett Linden, in a post on official Linden blog, nicely packaged as an extension of submission deadlines:
Any Resident can submit an application to exhibit. A team of Lindens and Resident organizers will review the applications, and if accepted, builders can be in any avatar form they choose (provided they are within PG guidelines).
What I would really like to know is why that was so hard to be done in the first place? Why it was so hard to predict the resident's rage about discriminating some groups of avatars? And, more important that anything else, why that wasn't the way they thought naturally, like it was (as it is) the only way to deal with things?

To clear it up, I appreciate that somebody sat down, got some thinking about the matter and realized that the previous was a very bad way to go. Late wisdom is better than never coming one. But I cannot take it as a bad dream, like it never happened. And I can only hope that this was a first step in learning a lesson. If it was.
Because, it is not the same if this detour was taken because of realizing things about respect, equal rights and freedom, or if it was done due to pressure from whoever it might came.

well, that’s definitely a good thing…
better late than ever!
It never was hard in the first place…. most of the problem was that too many people are retarded enough to think child-porn and BDSM are still ok to someone’s birthday party. Sure, it may seem like Linden was a bit dumb not to mention it should be “PG” but in the reality, it’s surprising how much more retarded people can actually get without all the common manner in general public.
In other words… people are getting too far ahead of themselves. ….wayyy too far.
:/
I don’t believe anybody ever had any idea of presenting and/or acting child porn on the birthday party. It’s actually you who is going too far of yourself, don’t you think?
I think some Lindens will be careful before talking unofficially next time.
I’m sure they learned, and the next time they just will act politely without telling their “real” intentions.
If Everett remained silent on that post in Massively possibly LL would be just rejecting politely all child porposals to the celebration.
I hope they will be careful before thinking of the policies next time. Problem is not that somebody has spoken unofficially, problem is that such policy existed.
God, I don’t know what to think of them? Are they useless for not foreseeing the outrage in the first place or useless for the way they have back-tracked? Are they weak for doing a u-turn or strong for listening as responding to their customers?
They *really* need a better business head on their shoulders though. I don’t want a company to act like a bunch of surf dudes sat around a fire making things up on the fly. Act like professionals – give us some confidence you are acting as one organisation, not several non-communicating, always-squabling factions fighting for power and the praise of the love machine (the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard).
[...] Lindens announced that all avatars would be welcome to build at the Second Life 5th Birthday Event – that includes child avatars, Goreans and the BDSM [...]
Oh no not the URI! I’m happy with URL’s until they work out what the URI is supposed to mean! ;)
The Lindens do not think of the whole picture when they make announcements and policy decisions, it has happened time after time.
If they didn’t want Goreans and kids there the sensible thing to do would have been to reject their bids, but give people the impression they had been considered.
Now, if there are no Gorean and kid builds there, people will say it was deliberate. Why do they create these situations?
I still don’t know what to say. These questions are not new. We live with this politics for a long while. And it doesn’t sound like anything will change in the near future.
To answer Headburro’s question, I think it is strength to make a U-turn, but is this one really made because they’ve listened to residents? We’ll see how long it will be until the next announcement that will provoke a new wave of resident’s rage.
