gonzo phenomenology of virtual worlds, by dandellion Kimban
I thought I've finished with all the censorship, restrictions and nipples. Honestly, I am sick of thinking and writing about it all. But, I have to do this one. Because, every time we speak about those, Lindens come out as bad guys. Which is not fair. I guess that, at least some times, they sit and cannot believe how open-minded they are.
I owe them an apology for that post about Michelangelo's David that has no nipples. If you haven't seen the edit there, it turned out that Lindens have nothing to do with missing nipples. It was artist's decision not to make them. For whichever reason. But then the story got into Massively. Pay attention to the fourth comment by Uccello Poultry:
While building the Isle of Lesbos exhibit I asked a couple visiting coordinators if art in our exhibit was "PG enuff" and got the reply "You mean the paintings with the nipples?" So I dutifully airbrushed out the nipples from a copy of Botticelli's 'The Birth of Venus' and two other works from the classical world. I look at it this way: By agreeing to certain restrictions on use our group was given free exposure of another type. By last count over 1000 people had visited our little corner of SL5B and the comments I've heard tell me that folks are taking advantage of the information resources about the Isle and lesbian culture. My goal is accomplished with just a little pain.

Little pain indeed. They say jump, you say how high? And they haven't even said "jump". Whispered maybe, but at that PG sim I see lesbian corner and just near it, transgender parcel. Surprised or not, I see Lindens giving place for different sexual orientations. And I see somebody who thinks that airbrushing nipples off is "a little pain". I see the irony in doing that to Venus, the goddess of femininity, love and beauty. And even more irony in that been done by a lesbian. I see somebody who thinks that airbrushing over the master-pieces of our civilization is OK.
Just to set things clear, it is not the same as Marcel Duchamp adding moustaches to Mona Lisa. One is the art statement, other is vandalism motivated by political small-profit and probably self-induced fear. It's so sad to see that I was right when I wrote about resident's self-censorship.
There is also another thing that bothers me. If this trend continues, and it probably will, we'll have a nice "clean" world, world where even nipples on 15th century paintings are too much. At the same time, just a few sims away, we'll have places where kinks get the forms closer to pathology than to sex. We'll have the violence, mutilations, humiliation, sex with animals and rapes.

Are we going to live in the world of extremes? In a world where love and beauty of the human body are to be destroyed in one or another way?

Very good and balanced post. What I don’t understand is why they did not simply made PG and M areas. I mean they have those ratings for a reason - why not use them?
I can only agree with Peter. Why not use them?
Well, the common guess is that Lindens wanted to show the world to the biz and “serious” people which might find it tasteless and bad for biz if there are too many mature things on the celebration. Which is, IMHO, bad for biz. Like those guys in the suits are stupid and don’t know there is something related to sex in each and every corner of the Internet. this way they just showed they are not quite able to distinct the areas.
But what really bothers me is not Lindens. It’s the community that goes with the flow and actually creates this very weird atmosphere. It starts with Lindens, but it’s us that will make the world be a place of extremes, leaving little or no space for being just straight (or mildly naughty :p) It’s either no nipples (not even on a painting or statue) or extremely naughty stuff (including but not limited to cutting, burning, dogfucking, toilet-diving stuff).
