It Is Not Just Porn

In the comments on previous post, Smiley asked

why the heck is there mature content at all in Second Life? I mean, people looking for free porn should just use Google to find some :-P. Plus, there’s Red Light Center now, basically a 100% sex world… :-S

I started my reply with counter-question but there is a lot more to be said. (more…)

Recently Gwyneth Llewelyn was analyzing what is the magic factor that makes second life so special. It is hard to put all the great things she said into one quote but I need one to start this writing

As pioneers of a new all-encompassing environment that is just now being created, it’s hard to step out and look at what we’ve accomplished. It doesn’t seem much. However, this is what the pioneers of mobile phones and emails have also felt when they started to incorporate these tools in their everyday routine — both for pleasure and for work — and didn’t feel overly “special” about it.

But we feel there is something special about it. And we all have our theories about what make second life special. (more…)

User Generated Censorship

While we talk about age and identity verification that is to be introduced to Second Life, the other side of the see-saw is hardly mentioned. What will be "adult content" that is expected to be flagged and prohibited for unverified users is hard to tell. Linden Lab is expecting that community will do that part of the job. Second Life is, as is often stressed, a world made by its residents. It would be, at least, unfair to expect that somebody else, even Linden Lab, do the flagging of "adult content". But not all fair and good ideas develops in good practices. (more…)

Three speach brings us an interview with Phil Harrison, of the Sony Computer Entertainment inc. There is an interesting part about differences of Sony's PS Home and Second Life pointed by Terra Nova:

We don't give users the level of influence over the environment, behaviour and object definitions that Second Life does - as secure as any other PS3 game…

Do I see loud and clear statement about connection between no user generated content and security? (more…)

As you may or may not know, Sony is developing its own virtual world for PlayStation3. OK, it is another "SL killer" in the race for the metaverse capitol. And once again, the specifica differentia between the two is user generated content. Once again Second Life is the one which will provide you a possibility to be creative. From Extropia DaSilva's Home: No Place Like SL?:

But can you? Can you really? I do not think that is the case at all. Saying "give them prims to build with and they will all be content creators" is a bit like saying "give somebody a canvas, paint and a brush and they will be an artist". Is that true? In a superficial sense I suppose it is, but inevitably one would compare one's own efforts with the likes of Turner, Monet, Picasso, Dali, and guess what? Compared to these exceptional people the "art" most of us are capable of is rubbish. Some people are gifted artists but the majority are not…
